I dislike how a lot of American comedy is being written, performed, lit, and shot. So I’ve been working on a more organic, DIY approach—working with the actors to develop their characters first, then crafting stories to fit what we’ve created.

“How to Fire Someone (with Jules and Jonas)” is a short film that came out of the early stages of this process, even before scripting. What you see in the film was improvised off a premise/prompt that I gave the actors. There was only one take. I knew something great was happening, so I was holding onto the camera for dear life.
