Alpha Mare

Karin lives in solitude in the hills of Marin County, California. When she suffers a catastrophic break from reality, she turns to a herd of horses for answers.

Alpha Mare was shot over three days in Nicasio, California with a minimal crew of two people and a herd of eight horses. We met Karin and were instantly charmed and hypnotized by her way of being. When she took us into her herd, her entire personality changed. Her voice was different, her energy was calmed… she was a different person. We set out to make a film that captured the power in that space, and to share the joy we felt getting to know Karin with the rest of the world.

We used an Alexa Mini on a Movi and an Inspire 2 drone to capture the majority of the filmmaking. Shoutout to composer, Surya Giri, the amazing folks at Berkeley Sound Artists who did all of the sound design and mix for the film: Bijan Sharifi and Jim LeBrecht; and Kath Raisch at Company 3, for the amazing color.
