Following a practical joke gone wrong, Carl prematurely announces the death of his cantankerous bed-ridden uncle Derek. But when family arrive to pay their “respects”, Carl must decide whether to reveal the truth or make Derek dead again.

NATURAL CAUSES was inspired by the question: What would you give up for family? I wanted to explore these themes of family responsibility – what we give up and what we don’t give up – through dark comedy.

I wanted to give an audience an insight into what it can feel like to live through family burden and loss, often seeming like a Kafkaesque nightmare with no end in sight. Humour is the film’s touchstone, but beneath that, Natural Causes asks important questions about family relationships, duty, what level of dignity can be found at the end of our lives if entirely reliant on family to care for us.
